SRBHOS Current and Ongoing Projects

WATERS Network (NSF)

Because both water quality and quantity are of interest to the hydrologic research community (e.g. CUAHSI) and the engineering community (e.g. CLEANER), the CLEANER Project Office is working with CUAHSI to plan a dual-purpose network called the WATer and Environmental Research Systems (WATERS) Network. The WATERS Network is proposed as a networked infrastructure of environmental field facilities working to promote multidisciplinary research and education on complex, large-scale environmental systems. For more info consult the CLEANER website or contact the SRBHOS main contacts at the page footer.

SRBHOS has received testbed funding from NSF to begin pilot work on this proposed network for WATERS. The overall project for SRBHOS is divided into two subtasks:

WATERS Network Subtask 1 (See also: PIHM online)

WATERS Network Subtask 2 (See also: Hydroseek and RTH_Net)

Wetlands (EPA)

Non-linear Responses to Climate and Land Use Change in Wetlands

Real-time Hydrologic Network (NSF and others)

RTH_Net Mission:

  • Coordinate deployment of weather stations, E-T-R-S sensor arrays, and stream gauging to resolve the coupling between climatic, hydrologic, and hydrogeologic elements of the primary catchments that compose the Penn State Experimental Forest under changing atmospheric, vegetative, topographic conditions

  • Provide reliable internet access and analysis tools for the real-time data generated by the sensor array network as well as historical and ongoing data archives;

  • Provide benchmark hydrologic datasets that will help define the role hydrogeology plays in long-term and short-term runoff (e.g., droughts and floods) as well as longer term climate dynamics and landuse change.
